February 28th Housing Task Force Meeting Update
Commissioner's open meeting to Public
The Union County Housing Task Force meeting scheduled for Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 6:00 PM in the Union County Government Center previously scheduled as a “closed session” by the Board of Commissioners will now be held in public session. It was the hope of the Commissioners that a closed Task Force session would have provided the citizen volunteers with an opportunity for a meaningful dialog amongst themselves; however, as a result of several public objections the Commissioners have opened the meeting to all citizens. A brief public comment period will be allowed only at the opening of this meeting as most of the allotted time will be reserved for exchange and dialog between Task Force members, staff, and consultants. A future public meeting will be scheduled to allow for additional community input and reaction to expected findings reported by the Housing Task Force and consultants.
The Commissioners had originally suggested a closed session as a means of expanding the focus of a meeting of the Task Force to issues impacting the entire county. Previously, the County’s Solicitor had ruled that the Task Force could meet in closed session “assuming that the Task Force will simply provide information and recommendations to a decision making body and the Task Force has no decision making authority that can bind the decision making body (the Board of County Commissioners).”
