Geographic Information
Systems (GIS)
Overview
The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Department maintains a computer system and a database of digital mapping covering Union County and Northumberland County. The GIS contains data layers such as parcels, municipal boundaries, topography, land-use, watersheds, roads, bridges and buildings. These layers are represented as map-features linked to a database containing certain essential information.
The GIS Department builds new user applications and develops maps to support the use of GIS by county agencies. Project work includes collecting, editing and maintaining digital data, watershed modeling, environmental constraints analysis, parcel mapping, and municipal planning applications. Recently added to our services has been the 911 Addressing for Union County and Northumberland County.
The GIS Department also manages the sale of mapping products, a county roads map and the licensing of GIS data for municipal, private and commercial users. The primary work environment includes ESRI ArcGIS 9.2, ArcView 3.2, ArcIMS, ArcSDE, GIS Server, Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Excel and Access.
