Top Ten Things To Do

Take a drive
Cruise to the sound of the Union County Historical Society’s historical automobile tour (on CD). Trace the Union County museum trail with stops at the Packwood House Museum, the Slifer House Museum, the White Deer Train Station Museum, the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum, the New Berlin Heritage Association’s Courthouse Museum, and the Dale/Engle/Walker House Museum.

Commune with nature
Explore the great outdoors at Union County’s two state parks: Shikellamy State Park, perched on a cliff high above the confluence of the north and west branches of the broad and mighty Susquehanna River and Raymond B. Winter state park (swimming and picnicking at Halfway Dam). Take it by foot on a hike or by ski or snowmobile when the snow falls.
Make it a market day
Immerse yourself in rural tradition with a Wednesday visit to the Lewisburg Farmers’ Auction, featuring fresh produce, meats, and cheeses from local farms, locally made handicrafts, and freshly grilled hot sausages smothered in onions—a farmer’s market gastronomic tradition! Cruise the county’s rolling farmland, stopping at Ard’s Farm Market and the county’s historic covered bridges. Seek out roadside farm stands (shoo-fly pie, anyone?) and handmade Mennonite quilts.

Float your boat
Literally. Kick back on a kayak, canoe, or inner tube on Penns Creek or the Susquehanna River for a little Zen on the water.
Get rolling
Take the road less traveled, and enjoy a bicycle-side view of Union County’s leisurely back-road arteries. Cycle your way from Allenwood to New Berlin and on to Weikert.
Culture yourself
Indulge in the many amenities of a university town with a visit to a concert or performance at the Weis Center for the Performing Arts, a Bucknell University basketball game at the Sojka Pavilion, or an art showing at the Samek Gallery.

Be a kid again
Find a Union County festival. Watch the Fireman’s Parade, ride the Ferris wheel at a summer carnival, or cuddle up to a cup of hot cider during Mifflinburg’s annual Christkindl Market. Events include Mifflinburg’s Buggy Days, the West End Fair, New Berlin Day, Lewisburg’s Art Festival, the Woolly Worm Festival, the Veterans’ Parade, the Chocolate & Ice Festival, Rural Heritage Days at the Dale/Engle/Walker House, and many more.

Act like an animal
Hunt and fish Union County’s great outdoors. Seek out the elusive white-tail deer, fly-fish in Penns Creek and White Deer Creek, or hook a small-mouth bass in the Susquehanna. The game isn’t exotic enough? Then head just north of Allenwood to Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland, an AZA-accredited zoo specializing in reptiles and amphibians. Clyde’s exhibits are currently on display at the New York Museum of Natural History.

Get a feel for small-town life
Stroll Lewisburg’s many retails shops, coffee shops, restaurants, and parks. Grab a latte to go, then wander the side streets to absorb the elegance and architecture of a truly Victorian town. Cap off the evening with a flick at the Campus Theatre, a restored art deco theater among only fifteen of its kind in the United States.
Come home for the holidays
Make Union County the home of your next holiday celebration. Start the season with Lewisburg’s annual Victorian Parade, then bundle up as you head to Mifflinburg for three days of German-inspired festivities and gift shopping at the Christkindl Market. As the holiday dawns, slip into the serenity of the season at the candlelight services at Bucknell University’s Rooke Chapel.
