What, where and when to recycle
The following items constitute a majority of the most commonly recycled items included for the Union County Drop-off Recycling Programs. Items accepted for recycling may vary depending on where you live.
Steel, Tin or Bi-Metal Cans:
Food or Beverage ONLY. Please, NO paint or chemical cans (put in regular garbage). NO propane tanks.
Aluminum Cans:
Food, Beverage, or Cat Food Cans. Please rinse cans.
Glass Containers – Food and Beverage Containers:
Bottles and jars ONLY. Please separate by color (brown, green, and clear). NO ceramics, window or auto glass, light bulbs or drinking glasses, mirrors, porcelain, glass cookware or bakeware. Rinse containers and remove and dispose of caps and lids.
Plastic bottles/containers/jugs:
These include food, beverage or detergent bottles ONLY with the numbers 1 or 2 printed on the container. Please, NO shopping bags, oil/chemical containers, toys, plastic wrap, utensils, Styrofoam or unnumbered plastics. Rinse containers and remove and dispose of caps and lids.
Plastic bags:
Plastic bags and wrap are NOT accepted at drop-off recycling programs, but ARE ACCEPTED at numerous retail outlets such as grocery stores, Target, Walmart, Lowe’s and many more. For more information, visit www.abagslife.com.
Newsprint:
Newspaper, to include inserts. If it came with the newspaper it can be recycled. Please keep clean and dry.
Corrugated Cardboard:
All boxes MUST be broken down. Corrugated cardboard only. Corrugated cardboard is cardboard that has ridges separating the front and back panels. This includes most cardboard boxes. Please keep clean and dry.
Magazines:
Magazines and Phone Books. Please keep clean and dry.
Chipboard & Junk mail:
Chipboard is usually a low grade cardboard in a single layer. It includes such items as cereal boxes, shoe boxes, waxed milk containers, toilet paper rolls, or soda boxes. Junk mail can also be recycled with chipboard.
Currently the only drop-off locations that accept “Chipboard & Junk mail” are Lewisburg Borough, East Buffalo Township, Union Township, Kelly Township and New Berlin Borough.
Office Paper:
Office paper to include colored paper. Please keep clean and dry.
The only drop-off locations that accept “Office Paper” are East Buffalo Township, Lewisburg Borough, Mifflinburg Borough, Union Township, and Kelly Township. However, office paper can be recycled in the “Newsprint” containers at the White Deer Township, New Berlin Borough, and West End drop-off sites.

- Only listed items may be brought to the recycling center.
- Sort items prior to arrival.
- You are responsible for unloading your recyclables.
- Place recyclables in the appropriate collection roll-offs.
- Any items brought to the recycling center that are not acceptable MUST BE TAKEN HOME WITH YOU. Depositing unacceptable items will be considered littering and subject to fines and penalties.
